The design perspective
A classic table paired with contemporary chairs can bring two design languages into a useful conversation. Harmony need not depend on a shared period. Related timber tones, a repeated curve or a fabric texture may connect otherwise different pieces. Choose a focal point first: an elaborate table may benefit from quiet chairs, while an expressive chair can become clearer beside a simple table.
In everyday use
Physical compatibility matters as much as the photograph. The apron of an older table may prevent a new chair’s armrests from sliding beneath it. Use a sample to check sitting space, the room needed to pull the chair out and the position of table legs. Before making irreversible changes to an older piece merely to modernise its appearance, consider care and repair. A successful mix can create a common daily use while retaining the identity of its individual objects.
