Japandi Furniture: Quiet Spaces with Karimoku Case
Based on Karimoku Case's hotel setup in Milan 2026, we discuss creating a calm living space with wood, light and furniture ratios.

Japandi is more than a colour palette
Japandi furniture may suggest light timber, restrained colours and simple lines. However, beige upholstery or slim chair legs cannot guarantee a comfortable room. Here, Japandi is our editorial lens for discussing the design; we are not presenting it as Karimoku Case’s official description. The useful starting point is to consider furniture, light, materials and movement together.
A hotel narrative in Milan in 2026
Karimoku Case describes its Salone del Mobile.Milano 2026 presentation, A Thoughtful Stay, as an imaginary boutique hotel. Under the creative direction of Norm Architects, the installation brought together a reception, lounge and suite. BGC Building Architects, which participated in the exhibition project, also highlights the relationship between materials and light. Our takeaway is to connect different moments of use through a coherent atmosphere.
Compare timber finishes in the actual room
View table and chair samples alongside the wall colour in daylight and evening light. Two oak finishes with similar names can look different because of their treatment and illumination. Timber tones need not match exactly: shared warmth or a repeated detail can bring them together. Strong grain, shiny metal and dense patterns can compete for attention. Decide which piece should be the focal point.
Comfort depends on practical clearances
A low coffee table may suit a hotel lounge, while a brief working session needs a different surface. At home, test dining chairs against the height of the table apron and the clearance for armrests. Try pulling a chair back, putting down a bag and moving through the room during service. A restrained layout succeeds when its open space supports everyday use.
Adapt the idea without replacing everything
Begin with furniture you already own. Removing clutter around a sound timber table, adjusting lighting or renewing suitable upholstery may change the atmosphere. If another piece is needed, compare a limited set of material samples in the room. Give seating comfort, cleanable surfaces and care instructions as much attention as reference photographs. Adapt the exhibition’s ideas to your own routines.
Must all Japandi furniture be light coloured?
No. Dark timber or a textured fabric can belong in a balanced scheme. Look for proportion and repetition, consider the lighting and protect comfort. How the room feels throughout the day matters more than applying a style name.
