Contemporary Bar Stools: Beyond the Silhouette
Foot support, seat height and balanced use are essential details behind an elegant bar stool.

The design perspective
A bar stool gives a room a strong vertical rhythm. Slender metal frames, shaped timber backs and restrained upholstery can produce quite different personalities. The first decision, however, concerns the relationship between the seat and the counter. When comparing fixed-height and adjustable models, consider where a user’s feet will rest, how they will get onto the seat and what degree of back support the setting calls for.
In everyday use
A new silhouette is not a single solution for every venue. A quick coffee counter and a restaurant bar intended for longer visits have different comfort requirements. Test a sample at the intended counter, checking whether armrests fit beneath it and whether a rotating seat interferes with neighbouring furniture. Ask for instructions and evidence of suitability for commercial use where relevant. An appealing design feels convincing when its everyday use is equally well resolved.
