Modular Furniture for Small Homes: Muuto Stacked
Denmark-based Muuto's Stacked system invites you to think of storage as a layout that can be adapted to changing needs rather than a fixed cabinet.

Start with everyday movement
When a room lacks storage, buying a bigger cabinet can seem the obvious solution. Yet new furniture may create another problem if door openings, windows and the space needed to pull out chairs are overlooked. Modular furniture offers a way to build storage from adaptable components. Start with the activities the room must support and the belongings it must hold.
The idea behind Muuto Stacked
Muuto presents the Stacked Storage System as a system that can be rearranged into shelving, bookcases, sideboards or side tables. Components within one family can serve different purposes. Our interpretation is that a furniture plan can anticipate a move or a change in working arrangements. However, not every module can necessarily be placed in any orientation or carry any load: follow the manufacturer’s permitted configurations and installation instructions.
Measure the belongings first
Books, files, serving dishes and small electronics need different compartment depths. Sort items by how often you use them. Keep everyday belongings within easy reach and reserve other areas for less frequently used pieces. Check usable internal dimensions as well as overall furniture measurements. Closed compartments can reduce visual clutter, while open shelves offer quick access. A combination can connect a calm appearance with daily convenience.
Draw two layouts for the same room
Before buying, draw the current arrangement and a possible arrangement after moving home. Could the same components work in a dining area if the home office corner disappears? Would doors and sockets allow that arrangement? Mark the furniture’s footprint on the floor with paper or tape. Pull out a dining chair to test actual circulation. When building upwards, assess stability and wall fixing using the manufacturer’s instructions.
When adaptability becomes useful
Gradual expansion and rearrangement can help a household whose needs change. Ask about continued availability of connectors, compatibility with new modules and replacement parts. Do not assume a colour or size range will remain available indefinitely. Choose an initial arrangement that meets current needs rather than buying unused components simply because they might become useful later.
Does modular furniture make a small home bigger?
It does not increase floor area. It can help existing space support different activities. Success depends on the relationship between layout, access and the amount of belongings. Doors that open freely and a table that can actually be used may matter more than the number of storage compartments.
